AIP Elimination Phase Mindset
The word “elimination” in the title of this post made you cringe, am I right?
First of all, it really helps to implement the AIP protocol by thinking of what you GET to eat, GET to do, and GET to feel rather than what you are “missing out on.” This is a mindset tool that is hugely beneficial to start practicing today, specifically with this protocol, and will help you later on as you apply it to other areas of your life.
After all, it’s only by saying NO that we get to state a resounding YES to what we truly want to achieve!
So, instead of “restrictions,” we have “things that at this time don’t serve the results I want for my life.”
Or, simply remember: “Restrictions” = “Things that Don’t Serve Me” (TDSM)
Then, when your extended family, friends or even total strangers (remember that waitress?) look at you like you’re from another planet for being on the AIP Elimination Phase diet, you will remember WHY you are eliminating foods for now.
BUT, if or when you decide to go off the AIP Elimination Phase diet at times (when you originally planned to stick to it) or unintentionally ingested something off the diet, do NOT beat yourself up!
I repeat, DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP….EVER!!!!
It does NO GOOD WHATSOEVER!
In fact, it will only slow your healing and flood your body with stress hormones — your body beats you up enough already with autoimmunity, so please,
GIVE YOURSELF A FREAKIN’ BREAK!!!
You ROCK for even committing to try (and retry) this diet in the first place. Make progress, but don’t set yourself up for perfection.
I’ll be the first to admit that sticking to a restrictive diet takes a TON of commitment and self-discipline. It does get easier over time, but I’m one of those people that gets a little tired of the strictness at least by the weekend.
So, if you decide to jump off the AIP Elimination Phase diet at times for whatever reason, give yourself grace, move on, and just continue to focus on WHY you are doing it in the first place.
You were/are in massive PAIN, remember?!?
If you’re thinking of diving into some food that you know typically leaves you feeling inflamed, try to distract yourself or change your focus.
Write down or journal about all the benefits you’ve experienced so far on the AIP Elimination Phase diet.
Have a glass of flavored carbonated water with a wedge of lime. Chop up some fruit wedges or veggie sticks and store some extra in the fridge.
Make an AIP-compliant treat and decide beforehand how much you’ll have today and how much you’ll set aside for other days.
You MUST love yourself and give yourself more grace, my friend. The AIP Elimination Phase diet will give you so much relief from inflammation that I have no doubt, if you truly reflect WHY you are doing it, you will want to stick to it most of the time until you are ready to formally reintroduce other foods.
Be grateful for what it has to teach you, use it as your guide, but realize it is not your master.
YOU are the master of your life and your diet, and YOU will find what diet works best for you.
You are AMAZING!!!
