Favorites Books on Nutrition for Autoimmunity
The Paleo Approach: Reverse Autoimmune Disease and Heal Your Body by Sarah Ballantyne. This was the first book I purchased on my autoimmune adventure, about 7 years ago. It gives in-depth explanation for the science behind the Autoimmune Protocol diet and lifestyle, along with detailed lists (including cryptic ingredients you will find on many food labels) of what is to be included or excluded if you are following the AIP diet. If you’re hungry to learn the reasons behind the AIP, look no further.
The Healing Kitchen: 175+ Quick & Easy Paleo Recipes to Help You Thrive by Alaena Haber and Dr. Sarah Ballantyne. The first few chapters of this 100% AIP-compliant recipe book delve into how to eat a nutrient-dense diet. It has a number of sample meal plans including thumbnails of some of the beautifully photographed 175+ recipes. It even has a “20 minutes or less meal plan for those who aren’t fans of the kitchen,” “on-the-go meal plan for the busiest people,” “family favorites for those with kids to please” and links to how-to videos for its batch cooking meal plans. Brilliant!!!
The Heal Your Gut Cookbook: Nutrient-Dense Recipes for Intestinal Health Using the GAPS Diet. While I have followed Dr. Sarah Ballantyne (The Paleo Mom) and her Autoimmune Protocol for the bulk of my autoimmune history, I think the GAPS (Gut and Psychology Syndrome) dietary approach has a great deal to contribute to the nutrition and autoimmunity world. In particular, I appreciate how this diet starts with nutrient-dense, exceptionally easy-to-digest meat stock, shots of fermented veggie juice and “fat bombs,” rather than allowing fruits and a good deal of carbs right off the bat. Stage One of GAPS is technically AIP-compliant, but just a particular approach to introducing foods that are powerfully healing and nourishing to those of us with compromised gut linings. You will love the straightforward explanations, beautiful photos and recipes in here. Recipes for all stages of GAPS are included. If you haven’t reintroduced butter/ghee or other ingredients in later stages of GAPS, it is simple to replace with high-quality meat fat or avocado oil. Please see my blog post regarding my experience with GAPS here.
The 21-Day Sugar Detox Cookbook: Over 100 Recipes for Any Program Level by Diane Sanfilippo. Written by a certified holistic nutrition consultant, this book is focused on reducing sugar and carb cravings in a delicious whole-foods-based meal plan. The cool thing about it is that it starts with a quiz to help you select which level of restriction you should take in the meal plans, taking your energy expenditure into account (obviously you will need more carbs if you are a competitive athlete than if you are mostly sedentary). There are many wonderful recipes categorized into main dishes, soups/salads/sides, snacks, not-sweet treats, sauces and spreads, and kitchen basics. Thankfully, these recipes include lists of allergens, and modifications for those with autoimmune conditions.
Favorite Kitchen Food Staples
Kasandrinos makes the best-tasting and FRESHEST organic extra virgin olive oil I’ve had at an unbeatable price. They have offered to give ya’ll 50% off their list price! Every bottle is third-party tested by two independent labs and lists both a harvest date (usually same as current year) and a production date. This stuff tastes AMAZING!!!

Instant Pot Duo 7-in-1 Electric Pressure Cooker, Slow Cooker, Steamer: I use this lovely machine to make my GAPS Stage one meat stock, consistently perfect hard-boiled eggs, and pulled pork/chicken/beef for tacos or burritos.
Omega Juicer: This is the perfect complement to my GAPS Stage One meat stocks. You can make beautifully detoxing homemade veggie juices with this awesome machine. Please see my post on GAPS here to see pics of the juice this puts out and how my family loves it!
Silicone Baking Mats, Set of 4: These save me a ton of parchment paper. I use them to bake all kinds of veggies, for paleo desserts, and to make paleo “buttermilk” hamburger buns (see The 21 Day Sugar Detox book above, page 166 that are tantalizin’!
Silicone stretch food cover lids: These are a super-handy, economical addition to any kitchen. Sometimes those plastic lids to glass food storage containers break or go missing, and then what do you do? These are also great to cover opened canned foods and even leftovers in the individual serving bowl.

Without my Audible Membership or Scribd subscription, I would be hard-pressed to find time to be daily absorbing good thoughts, stories, ideas, and habits into my busy life as a homeschooling mother to three kiddos and entrepreneur.

Favorite Catholic Christian Books
Speak, Lord, I Am Listening. This Scriptural rosary book with watercolor illustrations includes a relevant Bible quote before every prayer of each Mystery (Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious). It has helped my children, me and many others I know meditate on the mysteries of Christ’s life in a much more meaningful way and stay focused.
In Conversation With God 7-Volume Set by Francis Fernandez. Awesome daily meditations for the entire liturgical year. Great for your morning prayer habit.
Interior Freedom by Jacques Philippe. This is like a personal development book but from a deeply Catholic and spiritual perspective. Well worth the investment!
He and I by Gabrielle Bossis. A transcription of the intimate conversations between Jesus and a French woman (Gabrielle), recorded in her diary between 1936 and 1950, this book will help you to FEEL Christ’s heart tenderly speaking to you with burning love.
33 Days to Morning Glory: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat In Preparation for Marian Consecration by Fr. Michael Gaitley. As Fr. Gaitley states, total consecration to Jesus through Mary is truly the “surest, easiest, shortest, and the most perfect means to becoming a saint.” If you’ve heard of St. Louis de Montfort’s Marian consecration in True Devotion to Mary, this has the same desired end but simplified for us in an easy-to-do 33 day retreat you can do at home or with your own faith community. It also gives inspiring accounts from the lives of four apostles of Marian consecration: 1) St. Louis de Montfort 2) St. Maximilian Kolbe 3) St. Mother Teresa, and 4) St. Pope John Paul II. I did this retreat and Marian consecration with a parish group several years ago and learned how powerful it is to give your heart to Mary! We later did it as a family with this book: Marian Consecration for Children.
Consoling the Heart of Jesus: A Do-It-Yourself Retreat- Inspired by the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius also by Fr. Michael Gaitley. Similar in format to 33 Days to Morning Glory, this book will help you accept and even thank God for your autoimmunity and other life challenges with trust and love, knowing that Jesus knows best what suffering will form you into a saint. It will also help you to see Christ in others and see them with His patient, merciful heart.
